Strategic Planning: The Product of Organizational Strategic Thinking

Strategic planning is a management process designed to put the organization on the path to successful achievement of future goals. Strategic planning ensures the organization's human and operational resources, energy and stakeholders are properly focused on achieving goals and objectives, and can adapt to changing business environments as needed. It needs to imagine a successful future. This is difficult for some business leaders because they have difficulty thinking in new ways and new perspectives. The ability to cultivate an imaginary future needs to be a strategic thinker.

Organizations are always at risk of developing inertia, which means they do the same thing in the same way to meet current goals, not future goals. Inserts that have no foresight for the future are often equated with a lack of innovation, a lack of inspiration for myopia workers, and an organization that ultimately cannot compete in the market. Due to globalization and technological advancement, the business environment is now in a state of constant change, so organizations that fail to make strategic plans face risk failure. However, convening executives, managers and unit heads and ordering them to prepare strategic plans is unlikely to succeed because they may not know how to think strategically.

Successful strategic planning requires strategic thinking. People who can think strategically can bring new perspectives and provide new perspectives. This is one of the reasons why organizations with diverse workforces tend to perform better financially. Companies can gain new perspectives and new ways through their employees. Different employees do not fall into traditional thinking, so they have a great ability to envision new ideas and solutions for future market needs.

The characteristics of strategic thinkers are quite different from those of traditional thinkers. Blake Woolsey and public relations firm Mitchell Communications Group have done an excellent job of describing the eight characteristics of strategic thinkers. Strategic thinkers are based on the future, full of curiosity, good at managing resources, risk takers, able to identify urgent and important projects, able to adapt and modify methods, lifelong learners and creativity. Strategic thinkers are active, not passive. Being a proactive thinker means actively looking for new business opportunities and finding unique solutions that enable companies to take advantage of these opportunities.

Let the flow of ideas

Strategic thinking is an art form. Asking someone to think strategically to prepare for strategic planning is not going to work. Assuming that key people really want to overcome traditional thinking, there are several strategies for developing strategic thinking. One is to ask business leaders to question how the current work is done and to see if their employees understand how their work is tied to strategic priorities. Undoubtedly doing the same thing in the same way will stifle imaginative thinking. Another strategy is to hold meetings that require business leaders to suspend criticism and judgment when people imagine the future. Unfortunately, everyone has conscious and unconscious biases, so some real effort may be needed to avoid being judged.

Other strategies include providing access to employees at all levels of the organization, enabling them to provide new ideas and solutions that others can comment on. For example, an employee resource group [ERG] can cross-communicate between groups or include different people in a team [ie, a female leader ERG includes a male or Hispanic employee's ERG with a representative from an African-American employee community] . People around themselves, in the office or in the ERG, only those who agree with them and have the same background, may stifle the imagination and creativity needed for strategic thinking.

The strategic plan clarifies the future direction of the organization and the activities required to achieve it. The only way to achieve this is to develop an organizational strategy. This requires practical effort, but it is an effort to reap the rewards of business sustainability.
