"do you have Facebook?"
"Yes, of course. But I don't think you can find me because there are too many people like me.
"Hey, you celebrate your birthday in K-Box, right? I saw these photos on your Facebook."
"Brother, I saw your comment on the YouTube video I posted on my blog.
Social media or "social networks" are almost a part of our daily lives and have been abandoned in the past few years. It's like newspapers, radio and other media, but it's not just about sharing information and ideas. Social networking tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and blogs are faster and more widely promoted than traditional media. The power to define and control brands is shifting from companies and institutions to individuals and communities. It is no longer the 5C that Singaporeans have talked about [such as apartments, credit cards and cars]. Today, it's about brand new Cs: creativity, communication, networking, creation [new ideas and products], community [shared interests], collaboration and [changing games] competition.
In January 2010, InSites Consulting conducted an online survey of 2,884 consumers from 14 countries, aged between 18 and 55. More than 90% of participants know at least one social networking site and 72% are members of at least one social networking site. On average, people have about 195 friends who log in to social networking sites twice a day. However, 55% of users are unable to access their social networking sites at work. In the past, not many adults could accommodate more than 500 friends, but through social media, even children or teenagers can learn more than 500 people in just a few clicks. Social media devalues the traditional definition of "friends," which means trust, support, and compatible values. Although we know more people, we can't build strong connections with everyone we meet because our time available is limited. Here, social circles are about to have social trends, but the relationship is weak [people we don't know well, but they provide us with useful information and ideas].
Social media also affects people's buying behavior. Digital Impact Group reported that 91% said that consumer reviews are the first choice for purchasing decisions, and 87% trust friends to recommend reviews to commentators. When making a purchase decision, I believe that my peers think about advertising three times. A word-of-mouth conversation affected 200 TV commercials. With the use of social media, there is a lot of relevant news in the most viewed YouTube videos about "The Armless Pianist Wins and China's Talent". The network assisted in prosecuting cases [such as a college student in New Jersey who committed suicide on a video after having a sexual relationship with others]. So does social networking make us better or worse as a society?
Positive impact of social media
In addition to the opportunity to learn a lot of people in a quick and easy way, social media also helps young people with social or physical mobility restrictions build and maintain relationships with friends and family. Children who study abroad can still maintain meaningful connections with their parents. On a larger scale, there is evidence that these technologies have positive results.
In 2008, the president-elected Obama won the election by effectively using social media to attract millions of viewers or voters. The Obama campaign produced and distributed a large amount of content and information via email, SMS, social media platforms and their websites. Obama and his campaign team fully understand the basic social needs that everyone shares - need to be "who we are." Therefore, the event sends this message as "because it is about you" and chooses the right media form to contact the individual, call for action and create a community for social activities. They encourage citizens to share their voices, hold discussion parties at home and hold their own campaign meetings. It certainly changed the delivery of political information.
Obama's campaign has posted 5 million "friends" on more than 15 social networking sites [Facebook itself has 3 million friends] and has released nearly 2,000 YouTube videos with more than 80 million views. At its peak, their website MyBarackObama.com had 8.5 million visitors per month and produced 400,000 blog posts. To ensure that people find their content, Obama's campaign spent $3.5 million on Google search in October, $600,000 on Advertising.com, and $467,000 on Facebook in 2008. Wait. Currently, Obama's Twitter account has nearly 6 million fans.
In 2010, after the earthquake in Haiti, many official communication lines collapsed. The rest of the world cannot fully understand the situation there. To facilitate information sharing and make up for the lack of information, social media can easily report news in the affected areas and what help is needed. Many people's tweets provide an impressive overview of what is happening in the earthquake. The BBC reported this incident by combining its work tweets with journalist Matthew Price in Port-au-Prince. Guardian's live blog also uses information from social media and other news organizations to report on rescue missions.
It has been two years since CNN officially launched iReport, and people can upload video data through contact information. During the Haiti crisis, CNN published a series of social media materials, but not all materials were verified. The editor will review the citizen journalist's report and mark it differently with unconfirmed content. On Facebook, an organization called "Earthquake Haiti" was formed to show support and share updates and news. It has more than 14,000 members and some users even ask Haitians who are helping the group. Through the use of e-mail, social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, thousands of volunteers who are part of the Ushahidi project are able to draw reports from Haitian people.
The most impressive part of the impact of social media on Haiti is the promise of charity SMS, which has soared to more than $10 million. Encourage people who are interested in helping victims to use various social networking sites to send text messages, send tweets and promote their support. Global charities have also launched an event that requires rich and celebrities such as Ben Stiller and John Legend to use Twitter and Facebook to encourage others to give UNICEF. An aid worker, Saundra Schimmelpfennig, allowed other aid workers and donors to post information on her blog about choosing which charities to support. At the same time, donors have raised questions about the commitment and recognition of their favorite charities on Twitter, Facebook and blogs. After each crisis, social media has become a more effective medium for the spread of socialism.
The negative impact of social media
There are always two sides of each coin. Social media is just a tool or a tool that people use. How to use this tool still depends on the user [like a knife that can help you reduce food or hurt others]. The Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Program and the Internet Center at Elon University envisioned a study on "The Future of Online Socialization," which involved highly-involved, diverse respondents to online, opt-in 895 The findings of the technical stakeholders and critics are consistent. The negative impact of respondents included spending online time from important face-to-face relationships. The Internet has fostered most of the shallow relationships; the use of the Internet to engage in social connections exposes private information; the Internet allows people to isolate themselves, limits their exposure to new ideas; and the Internet is used to create intolerance.
Some interviewees also stressed that there will be some new psychological and medical syndromes, namely "the lack of meaningful quality relationships leading to changes in depression" and "new world society". The term "social network" began to trick users into thinking they were social creatures. For example, spending hours using Farmville today and chatting with friends doesn't translate into social skills. People become dependent on technology and forget how to socialize in a face-to-face environment. A person's online personality may be completely different from his/her offline role, which can lead to confusion when two characters meet. It was obvious in the online dating that the couple had their first face-to-face meeting. Their written information does not clearly represent their real people. For people, entering what others want to hear is more attractive than telling the truth.
Along the "friendship," social network sites and user creators have also redefined the term "privacy" in the Internet. The challenge of data privacy is to share data while protecting personally identifiable information. Almost all information posted on social networking sites is permanent. Whenever someone posts an image or video online, it becomes a virus. When a user deletes a video from his/her social network, someone may have deleted it and posted it to other sites such as YouTube. People post photos and video files on social networking sites without thinking, and files may reappear at the worst time. in...
