Alaska Earth Day Symposium with ILFI
Celebrate Earth Day with a day full of Innovative workshops focused on Material, Energy & Water followed by community discussion with The Municipality of Anchorage Mayor's office on community resiliency. The day will start with a workshop focused on Material innovation and transparency in the marketplace. In the afternoon, we will take a look at truly groundbreaking energy and water strategies to help your project become Net Positive. These informative, interactive workshops will focus on strategies and case studies of whole building as well as commercial interior projects. Learn about what's happening around the world, but also at home in Alaska. Our day will conclude with a panel on community resiliency. This year Anchorage became one of the first cities in the nation to participate in Cities of Service's Resiliency AmeriCorps initiative. Kathleen Smith of ILFI; Travis Smith, MOA Resiliency Coordinator and Anchorage's very own Resiliency VISTAS (Cities of Service) will lead a panel on Community Resiliency. Moderated by John Weir, Principal of MCG, the panel will inform us of how to address the impacts of climate change. Closing remarks will be by Mayor Ethan Berkowitz. You may purchase a ticket to one workshop or both-please see pricing below. You may attend the Mayor's panel with or without a ticket to the workshops. Schedule 4/22/16 8-12pm: Tangible Change: Materials and the Living Building Challenge - 4 AIA/GBCI CEUS as well as 4 IDCEC CEUs 12-1:15pm: Break for Lunch (not provided) 1:15 pm –3:15pm: Energy and Water Workshop- 2 GBCI/AIA CEUS 3:30-4:15 pm: Community Resilience Presentation 4:15-4:30pm Q&A 4:30-5pm: Closing Remarks by the Mayor Berkowitz 5pm-6pm: Earth Day Celebration Happy Hour at Williwaw Tangible Change: Materials and the Living Building Challenge The Living Building Challenge Materials Petal is intended to induce a successful and healthy materials economy that is non-toxic, transparent and socially equitable. In this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of how to meet the materials-related Imperatives of the Living Building Challenge: I-10 Red List, I-11 Embodied Carbon Footprint, I-12 Responsible Industry, I-13 Living Economy Sourcing, and I-14 Net Positive Waste as well as introduce and explain the Declare Program. The workshop will highlight successful examples of leading edge projects from around the globe - identifying innovative products and stories of how projects have been successful in changing the materials marketplace. This workshop is appropriate for anyone working in the building industry. Learning Objectives: · Define the requirements of the Materials Petal Imperatives and understand how these Imperatives support a fundamental transformation of the materials economy. · Understand how product selection can impact human and environmental health. · Identify strategies for the sustainable use and reuse of materials in the design, construction, and operation of buildings. · Explain what the Declare label is and how it can be used as a resource for healthy materials selection and Living Building project teams. Net Positive Pathways to Water & Energy Energy and Water resources are becoming increasingly scarce around the globe. How do we actively change the way people and buildings are designed and operated, therefore changing energy and water use into Net Positive production? Join us for a deep conversation on the Living Building Challenge, with a focus on the requirements of the Water and Energy Petals. Participants will develop an understanding of why water is such a critical issue in the built environment and the positive impact professionals can have through conservation, reuse, and on-site capture and treatment. Participants will see examples of how Net Positive Water has been achieved across of a diversity of building types and scales. The session will showcase the latest Net Positive Energy Building projects, uncover the strategies and technologies used and the policies and programs in place that are accelerating the uptake of Net Zero and Net Positive Energy Buildings and Communities. This session will teach participants what is involved with achieving a Net Zero Energy project and what it means to become Net Positive. Learning Objectives: 1. Define the intent and requirements of the Water Petal. 2. Identify regulatory barriers to implementing Net Positive Water Strategies and ways to advocate for change. 3. Define the requirements for Energy Petal and Net Zero Energy Building certification. 4. Describe cutting edge technologies and new ideas for greater use of renewable energy in the future
